Russell “Sterling” McCaslin of Hawesville was born on August 27,1959, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and passed away on August 14, 2025, at Owensboro Health. He is the beloved son of the late William Russell McCaslin and Flora Amanda Henry McCaslin
The world lost a vibrant soul with the passing of Sterling McCaslin, whose artistry, love of good music, and fascination with seahorses left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Born with a pencil in hand and a song in his heart, Sterling was known for his extraordinary talent for drawing. Friends and family recall countless hours spent sketching everything from imaginative creatures to caricatures, each piece reflecting a unique perspective and a whimsical spirit. His artwork brought joy to him and others.
Music was the soundtrack of Sterling’s life, especially the soulful rhythms of Motown and up-tempo disco dance hits from the 70’s. Whether humming along to Evelyn "Champagne" King or dancing to The Pointer Sisters, Sterling found comfort and happiness in the timeless tunes that shaped generations.
Perhaps most endearing was Sterling’s love for seahorses. Captivated by their grace and individuality, Sterling collected seahorse figurines, read about their oceanic adventures, and often incorporated their likeness into his art. To Sterling, seahorses symbolized diversity and individuality in unexpected forms—a fitting reflection of his own life.
Sterling is survived and missed by his cat, Constance; siblings: Karen Fleming, Dianne Estes (Kenneth), Mike McCaslin (Marilyn), Jack McCaslin (Sherry), Roger McCaslin (Pam); Nieces/Nephews & their families: Bill Fleming (Renae), Shane Estes (Susan), Erin Fleming (Paula), Brent Fleming (Ginger), Julie Newton (Jay), Holly Simpson (Eric), Valerie McCaslin Pate, Jasmine Portilla, Jill Barger (Bryan), Charlie McCaslin (Erica), Jessica Dylan (Kris), Chelsie Daniel (Andy), Alexa McCaslin, Nick McCaslin, and Natalie McCaslin (Dakota).
Sterling will be remembered for his creativity, humor, and the way he brought people together through art and music. His legacy lives on in every sketch, every song, and every memory shared by those who loved him. Sterling’s light may have dimmed, but the colors and melodies he shared will echo for years to come.
