Mary Gibbs, 67, lifelong resident of Lewisport, passed away on February 27, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was one of those meticulous workers whose devoted attention meant that generations after her will better understand the place she loved so much. Mary loved and took pride in safeguarding the records, the photographs and the stories which helped define Hancock County. She faithfully served as the county archivist where her interest in local history and storytelling was reflected and immortalized.
Mary Gibbs was devoted to her family, Her Husband George Lee Gibbs Sr. She was a loving mother to George Gibbs, Jr., Mary Compton, and Rebecca Gibbs, and her greatest joy was to be a grandmother to her seven cherished grandchildren, Natalee Williams, DJ Compton, Westyn Gibbs, Matthew Gibbs, Andrea Gibbs, AvaLee Gibbs, and Cedric Gibbs. She was also blessed with one great-granddaughter, and was joyfully anticipating the arrival of another great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her brother John Stillwell, a sister Norma Jones along with her parents Jessie (Laslie) Stillwell and Herbert Stillwell. She is the sister of Herbert Stillwell of Cloverport, KY.
Mary will be remembered for her kindness, her steady presence, her deep appreciation for history, and the love she poured into her family. She leaves her legacy not only in the archives she so carefully tended, but in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Hawesville Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10 am until time of service, Thursday at the funeral home. Share your memories and condolences with her family at www.gibsonandsonfh.com.
