Marlyn Jean Keown Obituary

Marlyn “Jean” Keown, 96, of Hawesville, KY passed away on November 21, 2025 in Owensboro at the Heartford House, surrounded by her loving family.  Jean was born on July 11, 1929 in Hancock County to the late Hugh and Rachel Hale Arington.  Jean was a member of Union Baptist Church. She worked briefly at General Electric and spent many years as a homemaker raising her three daughters. In her later years, she devoted her time to volunteer work, serving over 30 years with AmeriCorps Seniors. 


Jean enjoyed spending time at the Senior Citizens Center, watching Kentucky basketball, playing cards, working puzzles, cooking, and most of all spending time with her family.  Those who knew her will remember her unwavering faith, kind and gentle spirit,  and her infectious smile and laugh. 


In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her first husband Russell Adkins and two of their daughters Bonita Gale Powers and Ginger Willoughby.  Also preceding was her second husband Cecil Keown, a brother Marshall Arington, three sisters Emma Boutcher, Audrey Brown, and Lucille Toler; and two great-grandchildren Jonathan “Tyler” Horton and Emme Powers. 


Jean is survived by her daughter Billie Potts (David) of Hawesville, a brother Rex Arington of Auburn, IN, six grandchildren Gina Board (Lee), Russell Powers (Wavina), Rachel Ramsey (Matt), Joey Frakes (Jill), Judy Kleeman (Wes), and Cliff Potts (Lena), 11 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and a son-in-law Alan Frakes (Dee). 


Services will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville, KY with burial to follow at Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00pm until 7:00pm on Tuesday, November 25 and from 9:00am to service time on Wednesday. 


In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy in the form of donations to Hancock County Senior Services, the Hawesville Food Pantry, the Heartford House, or breast cancer research.
