Joseph "Joey" Taylor, Jr. Obituary

Joseph Roberts “Joey” Taylor Jr., (85) passed away on April 12, 2024 in Lewisport surrounded by family. He was born on Sept. 17, 1938 to Joe and Catherine Taylor in Lewisport. Joey was raised on a hard scrabble farm in the Muddy Gut bottoms of Hancock Co. where his parents bestowed on him and his four siblings the perfect mixture of good ol’ country fun and a strong work ethic.

One of the things Joey was most proud of was enlisting in the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Lewisport High School. He served his country for three and a half years, aboard an aircraft carrier as support throughout the Mediterranean Sea and stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

While on leave, Joey met the love of his life, Clara Jeanette Newton. They married on Aug. 12th, 1960 and spent 60 blissful years together until Jeanette’s passing on Oct. 4th, 2020.

Joey had a zest for life that was hard to equal. He never met a stranger and would talk to anyone about anything. He loved to quail hunt and continued that endeavor through the early 1990’s. More than the hunting itself, Joey loved to train the bird dogs and had several top-quality English Setters during his hunting career.   Joey also loved to fish. On any warm day he and Jeanette could be found on some of the local waters trying to catch their limit. They always caught enough to have several family fish fries every summer.

Joey and Jeanette raised three sons on the same plot of land that Joey grew up on and spent his life. They instilled the same mixture of fun and work on their sons.

Joey worked for several years at Olean Tile Co. in Lewisport before making a transition to Commonwealth Aluminum in Lewisport where he retired from. He made lifelong friends at both facilities.  Besides his parents, Joey was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette, his brothers Ledrew and Mike, and his daughter-in-law Becky Taylor.

He is survived by his sons Chris, Tim (Denna) and Pat (Tammy); grandchildren Amber Snyder (Ben), Jacob Taylor (Brianne), Cain Taylor, Jared Taylor (Lauren) and Paige Taylor. He also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren to carry on his legacy.  Also surviving, Joey's siblings, Anthony (Doris) Taylor and Veronica Taylor along with nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 am on Monday, April 15, 2024 at Gibson & Son Funeral Home, Lewisport Chapel with burial following in Lewisport Cemetery with Military Honors.  Joey’s family will be greeting friends on Sunday from 2 pm until 6 pm and on Monday from 9 am until service time at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to 4-H Shooting Sports.
