Charles William Scherer, 81, of Hawesville died late Monday afternoon while working in his garden which he loved. Charles was born in Hancock County September 9, 1937, to the late Virgil and Johnye DeJarnette Scherer. He graduated from U of K with a Ph.D. in Animal Science in 1973, and after a long career with the Cooperative Extension Services in both Kentucky and Louisiana, he returned to his family farm where he loved raising pumpkins and gourds on Papa’s Pumpkin Patch, an extensive vegetable garden, and taught biological sciences at OCTC. His strong faith and love for his family, along with his love for a good story or a corny joke, made for a full, well-rounded, happy life.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Noveda Lockard; four children Charles William “Bubba” Scherer III (Cheryl) of Houston, TX, Chrissi Scherer of Hawesville, Kathy McBride (Johnny) of New Orleans, LA and Lori Seaton (Robert) of New Orleans; six grandchildren Ashlee Kraus (Jimmus) of Hawesville, Jake Scherer (Trish) of Houston, TX, Ginny Moore of IL, Alan Seaton (Beth) of Metairie, LA, Johnny Scherer of Slidell, LA and Philip Seaton (Krista) of Gretna, LA; seven great grandchildren, a sister Mary Elizabeth Stephens of Louisville, as well as several nieces and honorary granddaughter Jan Walker of Hawesville.
